Why I'm reccing this fic: I've yet to find a story by Dira that I am not in love with but I pulled back from this because I don't care for hooker!fic. However, that's the trope – not the story. Instead, this is pitch-perfect characterization with some of the best Don/Charlie interaction I've had the pleasure to read. The weaving between pre-series and the current is incredibly well-done as are the supporting players who come alive in a new setting but the same old characters that we know and love.

From Homeward: Don swallowed hard. It wasn't him Charlie had been avoiding; it wasn't him Charlie was trying to hide from right now, right in front of him. It was this fight they were about to have, yet again--Don always lost when they fought, but that didn't mean Charlie ever won.

Don recognized one of those rare moments when it was his turn to be the smart brother. "Hey," he said, crossing half the distance between them. "Come here." Charlie looked up, startled, his face naked and hopeful in a way that hurt even more than his weariness. Don spread his arms a little. "Come home."

Why I'm reccing this fic: I know nothing of The Sentinel other than several of my friends have been in the fandom since Caesar ruled, but this caught my eyes because Don and Charlie as bounty hunters? Intrigued. This tale begins with tragedy but it builds up itself to create a rich story of love and loss and finding love again – and holding on to it tightly.

When Don had told Charlie he was leaving the FBI and going after Martinez alone, Charlie had gotten mad for the first time since their father’s death. He had accused Don of abandoning him out of guilt at surviving when so many others had not. They had come closer then to a full out, knock down fight than they ever had, even as kids. In the end, Charlie had gotten Don to agree to him coming along by the simple expedient of telling him that if Don didn’t take Charlie with him, then Charlie would merely strike out alone himself, in the hunt for Martinez.

Why I'm reccing this fic: Built upon the premise of "what if Margaret and Alan died while Don and Charlie were just reaching adulthood, how would their lives changed?" This is an AU full of twists and turns that I never would have guessed but it all works because the characterization sticks. The original characters are fresh and fun, which the Don and Charlie here seem a little surer, a little more grown up in the light of their tragedy.

It wasn't that he felt useless. Don just didn't feel as useful as he could be. He'd gotten a pre-law degree at UCLA, played solid ball for a minor league team, went into fugitive recovery and was damn good at it. Being away from Charlie ate at him, frustration with Cooper and his lifestyle had gotten old fast.

Now he was bar tending, and that was all he was doing. It had been a break, something to cool himself off with professionally. But after years of it, he'd had his fill. He needed to find something, he just wasn't sure what.

I'd forgotten about that last one! I knew I wasn't the only one to kill off Margaret and Alan in an AU (and I'm about to kill off Alan again amusingly) but I couldn't place who'd done it.

Her epic "Missing Persons" even w/ the ending (which is marvelous), I would kill for something set a few years after the ending.

LOL! Yeah, I am new to N3, trying to pull some other SPN fen over with me (succeeding slightly). lovesrain44's SPN big bang mentioned the the above fic which I read never even having seen N3 and feel in love with the characters and then went to the tv show. I've been glomming the fic (I am one of those insane OTP people who don't read much outside my pairing) I can find (let's not talk about how many times I've read your fic "Addiction" - I even made my fandom brain twin read it) and debating on whether or not to write something.

John is always my catalyst and less of a character which makes me feel bad because he's a good guy but he's often in the way of my plots. =D

Hee! Welcome to the fandom! We've sent so many of our fen over to SPN (BROTHERYAY!) that it's great to see one or two come back over the fence. /grins/

If you want to dip your toes in the fandom I co-mod the drabble comm numb3rs100. We accept fic of up to 300 words and have loads of great past prompts (on our profile) so it's a nice way to try out the fandom without committing to writing anything long. It's a very supportive group; we've nurtured a lot of the fandom's authors from their start at the comm so we're good for that. :-)

I'll have to go take a peek at lovesrain44's SPN Big Bang. This was my first year doing SPN Big Bang and while I didn't have the best experience with my artist, I did love the fic that I got published for it so I was happy to have done it. I kind of surprised myself not writing Wincest (I kind of have a rep as a Don/Charlie person in this fandom even though I write tons of pairings and gen) but the story that demanded to be told was mostly gen for whatever reason.

Surprisingly I've not read MP, despite cheering Dira on for ages while she was writing it. I've been busy publishing my own novel (Virtue, sequel to Vice) and I feared reading such a long piece would screw with my brain too much while I was trying to keep my own universe uploaded in my head. I promised myself as soon as I was done with Virtue I could read it. And what do you know? The epilogue of Virtue goes up today! Hee! /puts time to read on calendar/

I'm glad you enjoyed Addiction. That was one hell of a ride writing that and I'm almost wary of starting work on the follow up fic. Have you read the Conflict and Resolutions Series or the Last Call Series? Those are my big D/C ones, though Defensive Postures is nice too. I'm working on a D/C N3/Firefly fusion as well. All sorts of fun to be had with that pairing! Oh, not sure if you like threesomes, but poisontaster remixed a Don/Charlie/Amita fic of mine a while back to great success. Very well done.

Okay, shutting up now. /grins/ Just happy to have a new person from the SPN world come into the N3 fandom. We're in Season 6; we don't get many new people. :-)

Thanks for the welcome! I've been fandom monogamous for as long as I've been a fan so to have two fandoms is liberating! I love it because I don't have all my eggs in one basket.

I was just looking at numb3rs100 today, actually - the layout really caught my eye, very nice use of color [these are the random things I tend to notice]. I am a fan of short fic. I co-mod a prompt table community that is for SPN fic 100-1000 words; short fic doesn't get the love that it should.

Definitely take a look at it; she has the index here (http://lovesrain44.livejournal.com/26355.html) and talks about "Missing Persons" influence on it in her long A/N at the end. I thought you did Big Bang! I am sorry to hear it wasn't as smooth as it could have been. I read 80% of them, mostly as they were being published and what I didn't read my partner in crime did so she must have read yours because I haven't.

If I have any reputation anywhere it's that I am all about my brothers. When kamikazeremix went up I got teased mercilessly by my friends that of course you got a S/D fic to remix - would they have given me anything else without fear of me sputtering WHAT?! I am an total S/D!girl for SPN and while I am all about Don/Charlie (seriously, I love these guys, how did I not know about this show?) if there are fandom wars between the !girls (like in SPN) I'll cop to having a soft spot for Charlie.

I am pretty sure I've read everything D/Ch by you (and spikedluv and the other D/Ch writers including my dearest audrarose). "Addiction" is the one that I about melted over but "Conflict Resolution/Ashes And Pine" is the series that I went omg guh over and have read a few times. *points at self for being a very bad commenter*

And, yes, I did read E's remix but I didn't catch that the original story is by you - ace. I've been scouring the net for fic to the point of using the del.icio.us search engines which bring up the most random things at times.

I don't know about anyone else (and I've had an interesting viewing experience as I watched all five seasons over three weeks) but season five caught my interest again strong after season three all but numbed me out. So I am very much looking forward to season six... which starts next Friday? I hope. =D
