There was a bite of pain as he reopened the piercing that, if things were going well, had already started to heal closed between the times he needed to do this. He slipped the earring in like slipping into someone else’s skin. He was no longer Special Agent Don Eppes, who had just spent the last week building a case against a mother who’d killed her own children for the insurance money; he wasn’t anyone’s brother, or son, or friend; no one relied on him, and his only responsibility was to himself.
